Low-speed vehicles (LSVs) are a great way to quickly and easily commute around town! Unfortunately, not all LSVs are street-legal and, in order to ride your model safely around your neighborhood, you may need to purchase a number of new accessories or customizations for your vehicle. To learn how to successfully turn your LSV into a street-legal vehicle, we recommend reading our helpful guide below.

Check Local Ordinances

Laws regarding the eligibility of low-speed vehicles and their street legal use will vary not just by state, but from city to city. Before you make plans to customize your model into a handy commuter vehicle, it’s important to research your region's rules, restrictions, and requirements beforehand.

Required Materials

If your city or state does allow low-speed vehicles to be driven on city streets, you’ll likely need to purchase a number of new parts and accessories to comply with your area’s ordinances. While required materials will vary depending on your location, in a majority of the U.S. your low-speed vehicle will need working seat belts, headlights and brake lights, turn signals, and side mirrors. Windshields, car horns, visible license plates, and an insurance policy are also common requirements for street-legal LSVs in many states.

Getting an Inspection

Once you have all of your new equipment installed, you’ll need to take your golf cart to get a professional inspection. This will need to be completed yearly in most states and can be done at a variety of service centers and dealerships. Once your LSV passes inspection you should receive a license plate for your vehicle and be able to drive legally on city streets and roads in your area.
